Can't Stop the Serenity 'Adelaide' Updates

A 2nd successful BBQ, email raffle drawn, Anglicare receives donations

Finally we held our second BBQ today. The rain stayed away, and we managed to sell over 500 sausages between about 11-1. we even ran out of bread towards the end, probably due to the butcher not actually counting out the suasages, or not counting the little half ones that do occur when you make that many. luckily some hungry group bought the last of our sausages in the tray. we made about $550. However, it does look like we will be having to pick up the shipping tab for the merchandise and swag for Perth’s cancelled event, which is not much less than that (don’t EVER ship UPS international) This is good and bad. It means our donation goes down. BUT we’ve decided to hold 2 more bbqs, at dates to be decided later (but hopefully within the next 6 weeks) so we still get in our 3 BBQs and make our goal of $3200, doubling last years total. It also means that i now have a bunch of 2008 tshirts and posters. if you missed one, and you want to buy one, email me or drop a comment at the bottom of this page. It also means we are likely to auction off some of the swag on ebay, but well send round emails about that when it happens.

Anglicare Salisbury were extremely grateful last week to receive a number of boxes filled with food and warm clothing. With the weather being so wet and cold the last few weeks, I’m sure they will find a way to help keep Adelaide’s less fortunate warm and fed with our donation.

By now, the 2 winners of the email raffle should have received their prizes. one received a serenity visual companion, and the other a firefly episode guide.

BBQ cancelled again *sigh*

Sadly, we have had to cancel yet another bbq. This is due to poor communication between the union and the wine centre booking facility and the union running a FREE bbq at the same time our bbq was meant to occur. I only found out about this today because of fliers up around campus, or it could have been a very expensive day for us on thursday. Luckily I’ve been able to cancel our orders with baker and butcher (and candlestick maker?)

We just cannot compete with free. i believe we booked our bbq first, but as i said, due to poor communication, we were never alerted to the fact that the Union was having a bbq on the same day, let alone free as part of Re-O week. And of course, that is more important than our event, and we have had to cancel.

Hopefully the BBQ on the 14th will go ahead as planned, and we are looking at rescheduling this week’s bbq, so that we can still donate the same amount to EN as planned

Browncoat Appeal and early tally

Early tally so far is about $2000 (for reference last year was $1600) but there is still some money to come in for preordered items, plus we have a chocolate run being finished, and we have 2 more bbq’s, so expect that number to go up.

Last night i pulled three large boxes out of my car and tallied things up.

blankets -2
scarves - 8
jumper/jackets - 7
gloves - 7
beanies - 7
other clothes - 5

rice - 2
tuna/salmon - 3
meal in a can - 5
tinned veg - 5
tinned fruit - 6
soup - 20
BB and spaghetti - 26
other - 6

So together we collected 73 items of food and 36 items of clothing/blankets for the appeal

3 days to go!

With only a handful of days til CSTS, things are kind of hectic, but never fear, as usual we will get everything done, and put on a fun evening for all.

I’m awed by the number of people that are coming along, but don’t forget to bring your tin/jar of non-perishable food and your warm item of clothing/blanket (if you can).

also, for those who have bought tickets this week, you’ll be able to pick them up at the door.

For those who already have tickets, don’t forget to fill out your name and email address in advance. they’ll go into a draw after the event, and if we can contact you by email, we’ll send you a prize.

Oh.. incidentally, the crew will be wearing red tshirts that say Helper Monkey on the back, and I’ll be the one with the scary words Director of Events on the back, so if there are any questions, come find one of us.

Oh, and for those attending the quiz night, I’ve been told the Judges might be susceptible to bribes, so make sure to ask them about it.

See you all there.

10 days to go!

With just little over a week til the event, the usual panic is setting in. However, this year we are already well into the black, and we have a number of people pledged to come along.

That being said, With so many people now pledged to come, i am beginning to wonder if i have enough goodie bags. Ideally I’d like to have one per person, but it may be the case that only those who have preordered or booked their tickets that will get these bags and then first come first served after that.

The raffle will be drawn inbetween the movie and the quiz night (or perhaps just after the first round), so those wanting to enter that will need to stay around. likewise for the auction. We will have photos signed by nathan, adam, alan, morena, and summer as well as a poster signed by Jewel, a vol 1 firefly visual companion signed by Tim Minear AND Joss, as well as a flanvention (the one that happened) program signed by multiple BDHs, that could all potentially be auctioned off due to their value. so If you want one of those, bring your wallet/purse as the most likely accepted form of payment will be cash on the night.

Global swag has arrived, as have the t-shirts and posters, and my house is beginning to resemble a collectibles store!

If you plan on coming to our Adelaide event but have not yet booked a table for the quiz night, please use the comment form to let us know. if you plant o attend the quiz night but don’t have a table worth of people, let us know that too, as I have to tell our venue how many we need pretty soon. and if you are attending just the movie, tell us that too! :D
